Root Beer Apple Balsamic BBQ Sauce

Root beer and apples and meat oh my! That's the song you'll be singing once you lay this sauce upon your pork chops, ribs, burgers, and more! There are so many delicious players in this dream of a barbecue sauce that work as the best team possible to play up your favourite meat dish. Savoury, sweet, spicy - it can't lose!

  • 3 tsp Root Beer Tea
  • 1 tbsp EVOO
  • 1 tbsp Chipotle Olive Oil or Mexican Spice Olive Oil
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and diced into 1/4" pieces (about 1 cup)
  • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 tbsp dry mustard
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • ½ tbsp fleur de sel
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ tbsp chili powder
  • ½ cup Red Apple Dark Balsamic
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 1½ cups tomato sauce
  • 4oz can tomato paste

Step 1 - Brew tea in a small pot with one cup of water for 5-6 minutes, then remove to steep. Drain leaves from tea and reserve.

Step 2 - Add Harissa Olive Oil to a large saucepan and heat over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, and apple, sautéing for 5-6 minutes until softened.

Step 3 - Add brown sugar and spices to saucepan, stirring to combine. Add in remaining ingredients and bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Let sauce simmer for about 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Sauce is done once reduced and thickened. If it coats the back of a spoon it's perfect! Blend in batches in a blender or using a immersion blender in the pot until sauce is smooth and silky!
